Given how soon after meeting Vance the pope died, several internet users have sincepoked funat the exchange — and comedian Bowen Yang has since weighed in on the jokes during anappearance onThe View.
While speaking about how he recently parodied Vance during aSaturday Night Liveskit, Bowen admitted that he initially didn’t want to portray the vice president. “I just thought there would be better people for it,” hesaid. “It was my imposter syndrome. I was, like, ‘There are better people for this.’”
WhenThe Viewcohosts assured Bowen that he “nailed” the skit, the comedian joked, “Look, the guy’s a pope killer, OK,” prompting a roar of laughter from the audience.
Needless to say, the hosts were seemingly caught off-guard by Bowen’s comment, withWhoopi Goldbergand Sara Haines turning around in their chair as they burst into fits of laughter.
Whoopi eventually said, “Someone had to say it,” while Joy Behar reassured viewers: “He doesn’t mean it literally. He’s just talking spiritually.”
