“ It was the spoilt because I could n’t say anything … It did n’t go away for a long time . ”

Throughout the history of celebrity conspiracy theories, the rumor aboutBeyoncéfaking her pregnancy is up there among the strangest.

As you’ll probably remember, Beyoncé memorably unveiled her first pregnancy at theVMAs in 2011. However, in the following weeks and months, people speculated that the star wasn’t actually pregnant and that someone else was carrying her andJay-Z’s first baby,Blue Ivy Carter, who was born in January 2012.

Without getting too much into the absurdity of it all, the widespread rumor was believed to have started over aviral interview clipwhere the fabric over Bey’s baby bump appears to distort as she sits down, leading people to speculate that her bump was fake.

Beyoncé, who has since opened up about experiencingmultiple miscarriages, slammed the fake pregnancy rumors through her publicist at the time, calling them “stupid, ridiculous, and false.” And now, thanks to her mom,Tina Knowles, we have some new insight into how the speculation impacted the family all those years ago.

Speaking toPeople, Tina described the months leading up to Blue’s arrival as “one of the worst times of [her] life” due to all the horrible speculation about Beyoncé’s pregnancy. “My family is so precious to me and babies are so sacred,” she recalled. “So to hear people say the most horrendous things and call my whole family a lie, because we would all have to be part of that conspiracy and lie about something so sacred.”

Like her oldest daughter, Tina did speak out about the rumors at the time, calling the speculation “very unfair and very cruel.” However, looking back, theMatriarchauthor said she had to hold her tongue. “It was the worst because I couldn’t say anything. My daughter was saying, ‘No, you’re going to make the story bigger.’ But it didn’t go away for a long time,” she recalled. “It’s one of the most painful things for me, that people could be that disgusting.”

Having been in the spotlight with her family for many years now, Tina said she’s become used to the “lies,” saying the worst part of fame is that “people feel they can dog you out any kind of way and you’re not supposed to get upset.”

“I deal with lies all the time,” she continued. “I’m dealing with lies now, that I’m having, like, an invisible zipper at my mouth to talk about things now because there’s always these crazy rumors that are out there and, people just get to lie and they don’t have to suffer any consequences, you know, it is very sad.”
