" Gulp . "
Let’s talk tariffs, particularly tariffs on shoes.
As of this moment, Trump announced he would put a 104% tariff on all goods from China. China, in response, just said theywould retaliatewith an 84% tariff on all US goods.
Those go into effect April 10.
A CNN segment is going viral, revealing the potential impact of tariffs on sneaker prices.
Gulp . Me : How much would a $ 100 brace of sneakers made in China or Vietnam price if made in the U.S.?@FDRA ’s Matt Priest : “ $ 300 or $ 400 easily . In fact , we ’ve even just looked at the tariffs coming into place tonight at midnight , a $ 150 twain of running shoes will be $ 230.”pic.twitter.com/RzMmsP0gYT
Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America president, Matt Priest, was asked, “If a $100 pair of sneakers costs $100 made currently, whether it’s in China, Vietnam, or Indonesia — if it was made in the US — how much would that pair of sneakers cost?”
His answer: “$300 or $400 easily. In fact, we’ve even just looked at the tariffs coming into place tonight at midnight, a $150 pair of running shoes will be $230, and that’s just with the tariffs.”
So, a $150 pair of running shoes could be $230. And the same pair of shoes made in the USA would be $300–$400.
Great.
People aren’t exactly thrilled about the whole thing.
“Buy your summer fits now,” one person warned.
“I imagine we’re on the cusp of a New Age of American Smuggling,” another person joked.
And this person joked: “Klarna about to have a generational run.”
