“ Do n’t the interviewers ask to prepare themselves on who they are talking to ? It ’s the least they can do . ”
Seeing Shah Rukh Khan on the Met Gala carpet was a sight we’d been waiting for.
In his launching , Shah Rukh Khanstunned in an all - black courtship , designed by Sabyasachi , with a statement ‘ honey oil ’ baseball field Sir Ernst Boris Chain ( we see you , Rahul ) , and a bedazzled cane with a lion head . Sabyasachi — who debuted at theMet Galalast twelvemonth — appeared wearing his own intention . All in all , the Bollywood aura was brilliant from the rear of my couch .
His debut makes him the first ever male Bollywood star to grace the event.
It ’s about time !
However, an interview withVogue, featuring the actor and the designer Sabyasachi, caught the internet off-guard.
The duo was interviewed by singer - songwriter Teyana Taylor , andSaturday NightLive ’s Ego Nwodim .
In an interaction that surfaced on Reddit —missing from the video uploaded on Vogue’s YouTube channel—after exchanging pleasantries, Ego Nwodimsignaled towards Sabyasachi, asking Shah Rukh Khan, “This is the designer tonight?”
Which was followed by this.
FYI, this was Sabyasachi’s second time attending the Met Gala. In 2024, he made history as the first Indian designer to attend the Met Gala.
He was also the designer behind Alia Bhatt’s stunning 2024 Met Gala outfit.
I wish I could say that was the end of the awkwardness. Fans pointed out that the questions asked to SRK were surface-level, not in tune with his stature as Bollywood’s most bankable star. In the conversation, SRK admitted to being nervous, saying that he doesn’t do too many red carpets owing to his shyness. Responding to it, Ego asked:
This physically hurt to watch .
While SRK laughed it off, Sabyasachitook over.
The interaction had some fans criticizing the lack of appreciation of the two wildly successful and popular celebrities. “It’s actually so funny that these interviewers don’t realize who they’re addressing. They might actually think they’re more famous than SRK haha! For being the bigger star at THE MET GALA…he carries himself in such a humble manner,” acommentread.
OthersappreciatedSabyasachi for speaking up: “For those of you wondering why Sabya gave this introduction—IMHO—this was being live streamed globally and raising awareness is a good thing!! there are so many K-POP stars or foreign celebs I don’t know of or haven’t familiarized myself with until I see them at the Met or Oscars…but doesn’t mean their anything short of greatness [sic]!”
On the other hand, however, some defended the interviewers by attributing the interaction to lack of exposure, saying: “I don’t think it’s such a big deal. There are people who don’t consume our content—they don’t know him, and that’s perfectly fine…I’m sure there are A-listers on their side of the world who do know him. We can’t expect everyone to recognize him. I think we’re just taking this a little too personally.”
Despite it all, however, fans continued to pour love for SRK. “SRK is king. And this is why. So unfazed. So comfortable. And this is why Sabya is who he is. He didn’t care if people knew or not, but I love how Sabya knew that this representation seems very lazy, when they’re not making a big deal of SRK.”
The interaction may have left the fans divided, but Shah Rukh Khan striking hisiconicpose on the Met Gala steps will unite everyone, everywhere. The King of Bollywood, indeed.
