Last month,Aimee Lou Woodwas supported by fans when she took to her Instagram story to call out a “mean and unfunny”Saturday Night Liveskit that parodied her performance onThe White Lotus.

In the sketch,Jon Hammplayed aRFK Jr.-coded version ofWalton Goggins’character Rick, and made reference to taking fluoride out of drinking water.Sarah Shermanplayed Aimee’s character, and replied with a questionable British accent through comically large teeth and with a dazed and bewildered facial expression. She asked: “Fluoride? What’s that?”

Posting on Instagram the day after the skit aired, Aimee wrote: “I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny xo.”

Aimee later revealed that Sarah hadsent her flowersas an apology, and the comedian has now spoken publicly for the first time about hurting Aimee’s feelings with the sketch.

In an interview withVanity Fair, Sarah said that she’d been “excited” to play Aimee’s character onSNL, and felt “terrible” that her portrayal had landed so poorly.

Reflecting on the Aimee incident more directly, Sarah added: “I was excited to play her because she’s so iconic, her character is so iconic, and I fucking obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings.”

“Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset,” she concluded. “I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.”
