" Stealing from the ultra - flush . You call for food for thought and ca n’t yield it ? I see no issue with pinch something from a large chain of mountains retailer . "
Society is constantly evolving, and so too are our views on things considered taboo, unethical, or morally grey.
But these things don’t change overnight, so we often have large spans of time where some cultural norms live in limbo. What may cause one person to clutch their proverbial or literal pearls may be totally chill for another.
Recently, Reddit userlLike_balls(hehehe) posed this question to theAsk Redditcommunity:“What’s something people usually think is unethical, but you personally don’t see a problem with?“The answers might really challenge you.
.“Most forms of ghosting. If you’ve been on a couple of dates and they just disappear, let it go. Their silence is an answer. If you’re acquaintances with someone and they do this, there’s your answer. I had friends five years ago that I don’t see anymore. No bad blood, we were just heading in different directions. If they reached out to me or I to them, I’m sure we’d be happy to reconnect.”
.“I’m dating someone a few months older than my dad. People call him a groomer. I’m nearly 30, and I flirted first. People are still mad about it.”

.“I’ve had several people tell me it’s not ethical to job hop. Like, I should stay with any given company for a minimum of three years. Fuck that. Any company on the planet would sell your organs if it were legal and profitable. Anyone can be fired at a moment’s notice. If I can give myself a 10% raise to take a new job, I owe it to my family’s future to do that.
.“Being in favor of physician-assisted suicide becoming legalized in all 50 states. Ever since I saw my grandmother dying in hospice care and there was nothing else to do besides give her morphine for her pain, it made me in favor of physician-assisted suicide.”

.“Screening calls/not being constantly available just because I’m available. I saw your call come in. No, I’m not busy. Voicemail or text me and I’ll get back to you when I get back to you.”
.“Disagreeing with someone’s cultural practices. Not saying you should make them feel like shit or actively stop them or whatever, but it’s okay to say, ‘I understand that that’s your culture, but I don’t agree with it and think it’s unethical.’ Tradition is not immune to critique.”

.“Cutting your parents out of your life.”
.“Prostitution. Not talking about when it IS actually unethical, like when someone is being pimped out to pay off some kind of debt for example, but I see zero issue with consenting adults paying for/selling sex.”

.“Swearing. The words are bad…because they are bad? You can call someone a worthless moron that deserves to die, but don’t call them a ‘cunt’ or you’ve crossed the line.”
.“Piracy, especially if you’re from developing places. Nobody gives a fuck about us, why should we pay to get one of the few things that can enhance our life for us, which is entertainment?”

.“Any scientific treatments to reduce or eliminate diseases before they can happen, like gene editing. Like, if you could prevent your child from having a disability through gene editing. Some people say that would be eugenics or genocide, but I disagree. If you can guarantee a healthy baby, you should.”
.“Some schools punish the victim of bullying for standing up for themselves instead of the bully. I think some people deserve (and only learn from) when they get punched back.”

.“Homeless folks shoplifting camping gear. I watched as a guy experiencing homelessness walked out of Walmart with a small tent, and my first thought was, ‘Omg, he’s stealing that!’ But then I thought, ‘I believe in the human right to housing, is this not that?’ He didn’t even take a large one; he took a small one with a carrying case.”
.“I still don’t get the opposition to leashes on kids. Obviously, these people who rail against them don’t have children and have never seen just how fast a small child can take off at the drop of a hat.”

.“Not standing up for the Pledge of Allegiance. I really think it’s so weird that American schools make their children pledge loyalty to their country every day, especially when a lot of those children aren’t even old enough to understand how their country works or to even agree/disagree with the politicians. Another issue is that you’re supposed to say ‘one nation under God’ and that’s making everyone conform to the same religion when America is known for having people from all kinds of different cultures.”
.“Public health measures like vaccines and fluoride should be mandatory. Parents should not be allowed to decide if their children get vaccines.”

.“Consuming art/media you enjoy made by terrible people. Do whatever you have to do to get joy in this world.”
.“Not giving a two-week notice when leaving a job. Do you think they would give YOU two weeks before they lay you off or fire you? Fuck ‘em. You’re quitting for a reason. Bounce like a bad check and don’t look back.”

.“Honestly? GMOs. Especially crops that have been engineered to have higher yields and grow in environments currently too harsh for most crops to survive in. Like, I get the concern surrounding GMOs and how they can go wrong (Jurassic Parkis essentially an allegory of abusing the technology behind GMOs for capitalist gain), but all we really need to mitigate those issues is proper laws and legislations to make sure the technology is used responsibly.”
.“Being ‘rude’ in a lot of ways, such as being honest about your discomfort with someone, or telling a stranger when they’re behaving inconsiderately in a public place, etc. I personally love it when people do me this service, and I learn from it.”

.“Dumpster diving (on public property). I did or did not get a lot of cool or not-so-cool things out of dumpsters. Allegedly.”
.“At my old job, we had a cleaning list to do every day if we had downtime, but a lot of people didn’t really do them. They still got done eventually, but it wasn’t a priority every single day. When I was training a new hire, I told them they didn’thaveto do them technically, and one of my coworkers overheard and got angry and irritated. I was like, dude, we literally make $2.87 an hour, which basically all goes to taxes, and our income is entirely from tips. I’m not working/cleaning on all of my downtime so they can get free labor without paying us not even minimum wage.”

.“Stealing from the ultra-wealthy. You need food and can’t afford it? I see no issue with swiping something from a large chain retailer.”
.“Public nudity. Obviously not performing obscene acts, and we can all stand behind keeping public utilities sanitary. But places like the beach? Locker rooms? Hell, even certain types of entertainment venues, human bodies are human bodies. Maybe if we were a bit more used to seeing them, we wouldn’t fixate on so many insecurities or have unrealistic expectations of the average person.”

.“Hunting. I grew up in the Rockies of Wyoming. That Elk will feed a family for up to a year, the animal could starve in the winter (they are not easy there), and the animal most likely has a better quality of life than many domestic feed animals.”
.“I had a full-on argument with one of my teachers in college about self-plagiarism. I boiled it down to ‘if you would like me to come up with original material, then give me thought-provoking topics to write about instead of the same five things I’ve been writing about for the last two years.’ Then I showed her how many times I’ve been asked to write about a specific subject of the field that I was studying. It wasn’t one of those ‘as you learn more, your opinion will change’ things; they were questions that only would change if we were actively in our fields, which we were not because we were still in college. She didn’t really have an answer at the end, but she did say that I defended my point very well.”

.“I think the official policy for anybody who actually succeeds in making it into the country illegally should be, ‘Congratulations, you made it, now let’s get you a legal citizenship.’ It’s discouraged for a reason, but there’s no point in punishing people who are already there. If they were so desperate as to enter the country illegally, there was probably a good reason for it.”
