Olivia and John thought they were paying tribute to Olivia ’s mom when they present their girl the middle name “ June , ” but that was n’t on the dot true .
Olivia Munnhas revealed that her attempt to pay tribute to her mom when her daughter, Méi, was born last year massively backfired after it transpired that her mom had lied to her.
The little girl’s name is Méi June, which was intended to honor Olivia’s mom, Dung. But during a recent appearance onLate Night with Seth Meyers, Olivia said that she had been misled.
Admitting that she “thought” she’d named her daughter after her mom, Olivia explained: “So my daughter’s name is Méi. M-e-i with an accent over the e, which means ‘plum’ in Chinese, and we were thinking about what the middle name should be."
“One day we were driving, and my mom just says out of nowhere: ‘You know, people call me June.’ My mom’s name is Dung. It’s spelt D-u-n-g,” she went on. “And I said: ‘When do people call you June?’ and she said: ‘A lot of people call me June, it’s the Americanized name for Dung.’”
Still, she ended up going along with it, and John was the one who suggested that they include June in their daughter’s name. Olivia remembered him saying: “That would be such a pretty name and such a great way to honor your mother. So why don’t we name her Méi June?”
" I thought : ' That ’s a outstanding thought , ' ” she explained . “ So then , after we have the baby , we place a text to the fellowship like : ‘ She ’s here ! Méi June Mulaney , and she ’s list after Mom . And I venture hoi polloi call Mom ' June . ' And we ’re so unrestrained . ’ ”
However, Olivia’s mom did not match her and John’s excitement. Olivia recalled: “An hour later, my mom comes to the hospital and she’s holding the baby. And I realized she didn’t say anything about the name yet. So I said: ‘Mom! What do you think about her name?’ and she goes: ‘It’s OK.’”
“My mom loves to talk. She just talks — one time she spoke to me for 30 minutes about how she doesn’t talk a lot,” Olivia said. “And I remembered back to that day when she told us people call her June, and I remembered that there was nothing being said in the car. It was just silence, and then she just came up with this June thing.”
Ultimately, Olivia and John decided to keep Méi’s name as it was — even if it isn’t quite as meaningful. Olivia said: “I was like: ‘You know what? It’s staying June, and we’re not changing it.’ So yeah, she’s kind of in honor of my mother… But I hope she doesn’t grow up to be as big a liar!”
