Well, theYour Friends and Neighborsstar had a surprise return onThe Daily Showon April 9 to explain the strategy behindPresident Donald Trump’s expanding tariffs.
Trump and his economic team’s “Liberation Day” tariffs have presentedseveral conflicting explanations— restoring American manufacturing, raising revenue to replace the income tax, and negotiating better deals.
Then, on Wednesday, Trump put a 90-day pause on tariffs for most countries, except for China, because they didn’t “retaliate.”
When host Desi Lydic asked, “What is Trump’s strategy here with these tariffs?” Olivia told her to “be cool” before hilariously breaking it down.
“Trump knows exactly what he’s doing. He put tariffs that destroyed the global economy, so then he took them off, and now it’s only mostly destroyed,” Olivia responded. “Now, to avoid tariffs coming back, other countries will cut deals with us for better trade terms and our deficit drops to zero — problem solved.”
Desi asked if this is “when we drop all the tariffs,” and Olivia’s playful answer was shockingly close to reality.
Olivia then joked that we “get whatever we want, baby” including Ikea furniture that’s already assembled and Honda Accords with trunks full of Nikes.
When Desi asked if this is when the trade war ends, Olivia pulled a hilarious pump-fake to mock defenders of these recent economic decisions.
When Desi asked, “How does any of this make up the trade deficit?” Olivia responded that it’s not about the trade deficit at all.
Then, Olivia addressed Trump’s speech at the National Republican Congressional Committee dinner on April 8, where he stated that foreign countries are “kissing my ass” in response to the tariffs.
