tangible New Yorkers know !
Hello, hello! Welcome to another rendition of taste testing and judging. The dish? An infamous, often replicated (but never duplicated) NYC staple—bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich.
New Yorkers are always on the go, and we need a breakfast that is just as quick as our deadlines.
Today we’ve a panel of three cooks from Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens who are ready to put their BEC’s to the test. The rules are simple—the cook with the highest combined score wins.
First up is Bami repping Queens. She’s used turkey bacon and flavored her eggs with garlic powder. They might just be a bit over seasoned—yikes.
Paired with a Kaiser roll—a great nod to tradition. Bami decided to use pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo. Those ingredients sure are different from the norm, we wonder how the others will feel about that unique cooking decision.
D.K. from Brooklyn appreciated the Kaiser roll, and Kacee from Harlem dug the turkey bacon. It’s giving “Bami cares about your sodium intake.”
However, both were conflicted on the chipotle mayo. We kind of agree—it may be a tad too much.
“Wouldn’t buy from a bodega” kind of says it all, to be honest. Bami gets a total score of 10.5.
Let’s move onto D.K. from BK! D.K. from BK decided to use hot honey garlic butter sauce, which automatically sounds extremely bougie.
The toasted pretzel bun is even more elevated! We were digging it and immediately D.K from BK immediately lost us at “ground bacon” because is a Bacon Egg and Cheese an omelet? Bechamel sauce?! Okay, we’re done, bring in the judges!
Harlem’s Kacee was astounded at the pretzel bun. We’re uncertain if the reaction is positive.
Neither Harlem nor Queens messed with the pretzel bun (as expected).
And there was burned egg discovered under that bechamel. Shame. D.K. with BK walked away with a total score of 12.
Last but not least, we’ve got Harlem on the line! Kacee is representing with a classic BE+C on croissant bread!
She’s added crispy—but not burnt— bacon, scrambled eggs with just a touch of milk for fluffiness topped with cheddar cheese. Oh, yes.
D.K. from BK was feeling the sandwich immediately, but Bami was a little more skeptical.
The winner of the day is Kacee, representing Uptown!
We appreciate everyone coming in and giving us a little NYC love. Until next time!
