“ I never wanted my mother to feel 2nd to any woman . ”
Earlier this month,Marlon Wayansshared his unconventional reason for never marrying in an interview with theNew York Times.#
While Marlon was in a long-term relationship with Angela Zackery — with whom he shares two children, Kai and Shawn — from 1992 until 2013, the 52-year-old comic said that he made the conscious decision to remain unwed through fear of making his mom, Elvira Alethia, “jealous.”#
“I never got married, because I never wanted my mother to be jealous of a woman. I never wanted my mother to feel second to any woman,” he admitted in the interview, adding that Elvira was “very needy.”#
Marlon, who has nine siblings, also opened up about the impact that his mom’s 2020 death had on him, with Elvira 81 years old at the time of her passing. He said: “My mother’s death broke me. It shattered me into a million pieces, because that was my girl."#
“I told my mother on her deathbed: ‘I never got married because I always wanted you to be my No. 1 girl,’” Marlon added. “Those were my last words. I said: ‘Take that to heaven with you.’”#
While Marlon’s quotes initially flew under the radar, they surfaced on X on Saturday. And needless to say, people had thoughts. One viral tweet simply quote-tweeted a post about what Marlon had said andadded: “Well, that’s weird.”#
