Haha , so much has changed since then , and so much has changed in tech . engineering is such an integral part of the serial publication . Has there ever been a moment where you ’ve had an thought that seemed quite far - fetched at the time , but then you read about it and you ’re like “ await a minute ” ?

Eight Netflix posters showcase diverse films and series premiering on April 10, including "Common People," "Bête Noire," and "Eulogy."

Both : Yeah , haha

Charlie : Yes , and there ’s even an idea which I keep pick away at that I want to do but I have n’t done yet , and I keep slightly worrisome , “ Will this wait like a retrospective documentary by the fourth dimension we do it ? ” Quite often we ’ve done episodes that I suppose , “ Oh that ’s a long way forth from chance , ” and then like two workweek subsequently , on the spur of the moment something happens . Last season , we did an episode , Joan is terrible , which was about a sort of AI - engender TV , on some level , and I do n’t think that at that point , I ’d quite seen how speedily it would get like photorealistic .

Jessica Rhoades : But we did know we had to do it last season .

Group of people talking casually; one man holds drink, another wears open jacket, and a few others engage in conversation nearby

Charlie : We acknowledge that we had to get this out quickly

Jessica : You’re always deciding because Charlie has so many idea , and towards the last of the time of year , he ’s drop a line as we ’re blast . So , at the end of the season , it is the first time that you are kind of both looking at the season you have and then , hopefully – touch wood – projecting the season in the future . So every once in a while , at the end of the season , he ’s like “ this estimate or this idea ? ” and I think Joan was one where we were like we well go now because next time of year might be too later .

Charlie : And this season … I suspectCommon People , I suspect the technical school in that will be earlier than – even though it ’s quite far fetched , I suspect the tech is belike happening and about to be launch .

Have you ever retrieve that one of your episodes has potentially inspired tech ?

Charlie : Well , occasionally , I know that it has .

Jessica : A few people are adjudicate to trade something right now that I think is pretty Charlie Brooker .

Two people sit holding hands on a sofa in an office, looking concerned. A coffee mug is on the table in front of them

Charlie : Yes , well I ’ve seen somebody who – this was a couple years ago now – when somebody was doing a sort of AI like chatbot for grieving hoi polloi , and they said in some interview , “ I watchedBe Right Backepisode ofBlack Mirrorand thought that looks like a good thought ” and I remember , “ I do n’t think that in the episode we show that needfully benign a good mind ” there ’s certainly a nuance to that . I can see if somebody ’s grieving and they infer comfort from something , I do n’t need to judge them , but as , there are possible downside there .

They probably only keep an eye on up until midway and thought to ignore the lessons …

Charlie : They switch it off ! They turned it off halfway through to work on their business programme

Before anything went wrong , they were like : “ Okay , got that idea . ”

Charlie : Haha , cocksucker monetise my content !

Back when the show first launched in 2011 , we used to see a muckle of raw faces , brand unexampled actors were being brought to the cover ; fast forward to now , we ’re getting a lot of household name . Now , when you ’re writing installment or lead off casting , do you already have epithet in mind , or are you still casting like you were in the beginning ?

A woman in elegant attire sits at a grand piano in a spacious room, glancing back with a soft expression. Artful decor is visible in the background

Charlie : Sometimes it ’s a commixture . I mean , candidly , when you ’re writing , you kind of cast hoi polloi in your head because it helps you to write . They often are n’t the soul , but sometimes , occasionally , they have been the person who ’s really in the episode .

I think we ’ve got a genuine commixture because we ’ve got some really bragging stars this season , and they ’re there because they ’re have it off capital actor , but we ’ve also convey some mass who are possibly less well known , who are issue talents . I recall that ’s also a very significant mo to the show ’s DNA that I guess sometimes gets somewhat overlooked . I find out citizenry saying , “ Oh , it ’s all celebrities now ” well no , fuck off , no it is n’t . We ’ve get loads of actors that people are n’t mindful of yet , but will be tomorrow .

I consider there ’s a good mix !

Charlie : I think there ’s a right mix . I ’m glad you ’ve said that . I got justificative and raging about it for no grounds .

Jessica : Well , thank you !

Charlie : Thank you for that !
