Last year,Dakota Johnsonsparked backlash after she called nepotism discourse“incredibly annoying” and “boring.”She said on theTodayshow, “When it first started, I found it to be incredibly annoying and boring, like, if you’re a journalist, write about something else. That’s just, like, lame.”
If you didn’t know, Dakota is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, grand-daughter of Tippi Hedren — who starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘60s horror filmThe Birds— and former step-daughter of Spanish actor Antonio Banderas.
While Dakota bourgeon to renowned fame after starring inFifty Shades of Greyin 2015 , she actually made her motion-picture show unveiling when she was just 10 , bagging a role alongside her mummy inCrazy in Alabama .
Elsewhere in theTodayinterview , Dakota recalled asking her mom for help after her dadcut her off financiallywhen she choose to pursue acting instead of going to college . “ I definitely had mo where I could n’t afford groceries and things like that and I needed to ask my mom to help me , ” she shared .
Now, a year later, Dakota has reflected on the early days of her career again, and how she coped financially.
During a conversation withPedro PascalforElleahead of the release of their movieMaterialists, Dakota revealed that she started auditioning for acting jobs after she failed to get into the performing arts school Juilliard.
“I didn’t get in and my dad cut me off because I didn’t go to college. So, I started auditioning. I think I was 19 when I didThe Social Network, and then little jobs and stuff after that,” she began.
When Pedro asked if it was a “scary” time of her life, Dakota replied, “For a couple of years it was hard to make money. There were a few times when I’d go to the market and not have money in my bank account or not be able to pay rent, and I’d have to ask my parents for help.”
“I’m very grateful that I had parents that could help me and did help me. But it certainly was not fun,” she shared before adding: “The auditioning process, as you know, is the fucking worst.”
“Lol it wasn’t fun to ask for money. She’s known real suffering,” one person joked, while another quipped, “it was very hard to ask her very rich and well connected parents for money. please understand.”
