Recently, I scouredRedditand ourvery own BuzzFeed communityin search of real-life exorcism and possession stories. Whether people were possessed themselves, witnessed an exorcism with their own eyeballs, or even participated in one, I wanted to hear all the details. And so, here are 9 real-life stories that recount possessions and exorcisms across various cultures and religions. Let’s get into it:

1.“I have never known what to make of this. The high school I went to was a religious private school. Senior year, it was traditional for the entire senior class to go on a religious retreat up in this remote resort in the mountains with a few teachers. The point of the retreat was to grow closer to each other as a class and also to… find God? Experience spirituality? They took away our phones and forbade us from using any form of the internet or communicating with the outside world. Then, they made us go through a series of soul-baring exercises and speeches and whatnot. Honestly, pretty cheesy stuff, not that exciting.”

" On the third twenty-four hour period of the retreat , however , the integral senior class was in the main manor hall doing an ' hour of silent orison ' that was middling much like meditation , but we were guess to be communicating with God . All of a sudden , there was a huge crash . Everyone looked over to see a little girl toppled over onto the story . As everyone stared , she started writhing around on the priming coat and holler — but not scream in , like , pain . The voice that she was screaming was in a really strange , deep voice and did n’t sound like her at all . Someone scream , ' She ’s seizing ! ' I remember that because there was a young woman in our class who was known to have epileptic capture and would have them in assembly pretty frequently , but it was n’t the same girl .

Then she stood up and pop out yelling in ' tongues . ' Her eyes were rolled up , and her head keep twitch back and away . She started to run all around the room , yelling in an opaque , on the face of it gibberish speech communication . Every now and then , she would go at the cross in the middle of the room and then function back , scream and crying .

At first , I candidly thought this was a dumb mellow school prank to freak everyone out , but if that was what it was , she took it way too far . The teacher tried to calm her down , but she just kept screaming in this strange speech . She started attract on her haircloth , so one of the teacher called an ambulance , but we all knew it would take a while for them to get to this distant retreat . Another instructor tried to take her by the shoulders , and she delve her nail into his limb really hard and just keep yell . It fill several more minutes to calm her down ( the teachers actually evacuated us from the room ) and then she just … went smooth .

They lead the girl away that nighttime ( though I do n’t bonk how , we were all keep in the cafeteria after that ) , and she never come back to schoolhouse after the retreat was over . I was n’t supporter with her friend , so I do n’t know if they knew what really happened … She was in all probability expelled for her ' prank . ' But possibly not ! It went on elbow room too long and too convincingly for me to really tell myself that she ’d fuck around in front of all the teacher like that . It was insane . I do n’t know . None of the teacher were ever grant to tattle about it when we take afterward . "

2.“One of my teachers used to work at a boarding school and told us this story. One night during a school movie night, a student left to use the restroom. After a bit of time had gone by, my teacher went to check on her to make sure she was okay. She wasn’t. She was huddled in the corner of a shower, foaming at the mouth with bloodshot eyes. The girl started hissing at her, and my teacher freaked out and called a couple of other staff members over, and one of them started spewing out seemingly incoherent things at her in a really deep voice. Eventually, she snapped out of it and didn’t remember a thing. My teacher and two other supervisors brought her back to her dorm room after and I guess she had things like ‘I <3 Satan’ written on her bunk bed and stuff. Pretty creepy. After this incident, the girl left the school completely.

3.“I live in a country where possessions/exorcisms happen fairly regularly. Sometimes during certain ceremonies, people will invite spirits in to possess them on purpose, usually to perform a dance or answer people’s questions. There are some dance rituals here that are specifically performed by people (often young women and girls) who are susceptible to possession, and they invite the spirit in, under the guidance of a priest or priestess, to perform the dance. They basically look like they’re in a trance (partially lidded eyes, soft gaze) and the dance is really jerky and stiff. Or in another dance, one of the performers goes into a trance and basically becomes ‘deranged’ and starts kicking and jumping into a fire, but he always comes out un-burned.”

" Any time it ’s done on purpose like that , it ’s relatively controlled , and the non-Christian priest will then splash holy piddle on them to rout the spirit . It seems comparatively painless , albeit exhausting for the ' legion . ' But then I ’ve also seen people possessed by dark strong drink , not on design . I even know a therapist here who literally streams his exorcisms on Facebook live . Usually , it ’s someone screaming and crying in anguish in his dingy family elbow room , thrash about on his sofa , while he tone mantra at them , yells at the spirit , uses holy water , and occasionally smacks them on the drumhead or dresser or back if it ’s a unregenerate one . At some point , the mortal usually passes out , then when he awaken the person with holy pee , they ’re better .

Last time I watched one of his Facebook lives , ' Bohemian Rhapsody ' was spiel on his radio , and the family of the possessed were chatting and eating fried foods the whole meter . It’s … hard to explain when it ’s just so much an accepted part of the culture here . "

4.“My wife delivered a baby in 2004, and I was told this when she returned home. During this delivery, her patient (the mother) was possessed. The husband and doula were both present, as was a visiting nurse. During the delivery, the mother started speaking in tongues, and her face started contorting. The husband was visibly getting worried and approached his wife, only to be thrown across the room. He was dazed, but conscious. From what I was told, there were many peculiar occurrences during this delivery, but the worst of all was that the doula (I am retelling the story, so I was not a witness, but three people present swear to this) was suddenly lifted into the air. It was not by any physical means — no one was touching her. After she was released to the ground, the baby was born, and nothing strange occurred afterward.”

5.“When I was 14, my best friend at the time and I got a Ouija table and decided to play with it a bit. We went into a dark room at my place, lit some candles, and started messing around. Another friend of ours knocked on the door as we tried to contact the spirits, so we let her in and resumed. This third person kept mocking us as we tried to get the ‘supernatural messages.’ Then, all of a sudden, she passed out.”

" We think she was joking , but then she open up her center and started to talk with a spokesperson that was n’t hers . It was damn chilling , but we still thought she could be playing a trick on us . Then she laughed ( a horrible jest ) and start to recite matter that happened to me that I never had said to anyone , particularly not her . She did the same for my best ally .

Candles started flickering and the flame conk a bit too gamy for skeptical me not to shiver in spitefulness of myself . My best friend ran out of my place straight to their neighbor , who was a Candomblé   mãe de santo ( female parent - of - saint ) .

When the woman came to my place and check our ally , she gasped and secernate us to help wreak the girl to her spot . We did so , but not before getting some scratches from our supporter for not allowing her to get disrobe in daytime and blocking her from calling to some mankind who were looking at us as we march toward the holy mother ’s lieu . Once there , she interlace herself with the girlfriend in a room and say us to hold off alfresco .

I do n’t know what happen , but after a couple of hours , our friend came out … very well-worn and did n’t remember anything after we allow her in and started to take on with the Ouija board . The Mother - of - saints told us off , warn us to not to play with what we ca n’t control . "

6.“I had an exorcism. In my experience, it is basically an intensive small-group prayer session. There was some sprinkling of blessed water, and one time, one of the priests laid his stole on me. Completely non-violent, very loving and supportive. And while I won’t take a stand on why it worked, it did resolve the symptoms I was having. My psychiatrist believes that I believed it would work, and therefore, it helped me overcome the obsessive thoughts and move on with my life. The thing is…it was a last-ditch effort and I didn’t actually believe it would work. All I know is that it did help.”

7.“I had three exorcisms when I was in a cult. I was told I was possessed multiple times, and fear grew until it was too much, and I fed into it. I began to hear and see things, it was awful. The first time, it was six hours of me recounting my life while six people prayed over me and pointed out when they believed I had gotten possessed. I had to say a bunch of prayers and open up about every single thing, it was honestly really traumatic and gave them a HUGE advantage for blackmailing me in the future.”

" The second was during a chapel service . I was pushed to the ground by many of my peers and leaders , and they all lay hands on me , holding me down . It was very smothering . I could n’t move and they forced me to scream out for the fiend to allow me alone . They made me hollo that I was a shaver of God and recount certain sacred scripture , etc . My part was gruff when they rent me go , I ’m not sure how long it lasted . I was very spicy , exhausted , and did n’t feel relief .

The third one was at my house at 3 a.m. with two other people . They mouth about how they saw the daimon that was following me and where it was stand up in the room . I was terrorize , and they prayed for hours over me and over the room . There was great deal of yelling and crying . We did n’t slumber that nighttime and attended church the next forenoon . It was n’t as unsound as the second because I was allow to sit up .

These all sound very uneventful typewrite out , but I had to be in therapy for yr to get over the things they did . I have been loose from the cult for over five years , but sometimes , I still fear that I will see or hear a demon . Even though I have n’t since I pass on the cult . Even though I know it ’s not real . "

8.“I had an exorcism done once when I was a young teen. I was going through horrible panic attacks, anxiety, and depression at the time. Some background: my parents are both devout Christians. They’re both Sunday school teachers, and my grandfather was a priest. I remember one day, my grandfather and our church priest came over to bless our house. We went through each room, saying prayers and cleansing with holy water. We finished all the rooms and stopped in the kitchen, where I was told to kneel in front of my grandfather.”

" I recall being very disoriented at the request , but I follow as I was gently push to the base . My grandad and the other priest then began to bless me with holy water and chanted in a mix of Greek and English . I still had no idea what was go on until I take heed something along the lines of , ' Dear Lord , ban these daimon from this nipper ’s body and clean her soul . ' It really was mostly a lot of prayers and holy water just being sprinkled about . It did n’t do anything other than make me more unquiet that my parent think I was possessed , lmao . "

9.“I’ve never told that story to anyone because 1. just talking about it freaks me out good and 2. I know 99% of people won’t believe me. But, here we go. This story is about my aunt. There was a time when she would go ‘crazy.’ She would get INCREDIBLY angry/out of control randomly, spitting nonsense words. She seems to have 10 times my strength then, too. There would be absolutely no way I, my father, or both of us together would be able to hold her down. For context, I am a 6'2, rather fit man. I practice Aikido and can bench press 240. My father and his brothers are pretty much as tall as I am, maybe a little less strong due to age, although most of them have been in fighting sports for a while. My aunt is about 5'4 and probably weighs 110lbs at best. All four of us were needed to actually pin my aunt and get her to stop moving until she calmed down.”

" It was super scary . She could just pour down off at any time without warning . Now , I did n’t believe in the supernatural , but my grandma — a rather traditional Maroc char — was convinced she was possessed . And … aboveboard , it really mat up like it . For those who do n’t know , Morocco has a pretty big culture around the supernatural , possession , exorcism , and the like , so most of the elder in the home firm believe in it .

tight onwards a few month later , and it was getting elbow room too unmanageable for us to plow her . My uncle contacted a good Quaker in Morocco who had an ' exorciser ' in his family . The exorciser asked us to do one odd thing . He asked my aunty if she could put a drop of her blood in a shabu of weewee and obscure the glass somewhere in the apartment while she slept . We were reluctant , but my grandma impel her to do it . In the morning , the glass was empty . I ’m still confident she credibly just woke up at night and drank it , but the exorcist ’s account was ' she is possessed by a fiend ( commonly known in the Moslem culture as ' djinn ' ) , and giving him this profligate just was a way for you to receive him and calm him down temporarily . ' He then said she involve to see an exorcist ASAP .

Seeing her pay off wilder and wilder , we commence being convinced he was right . In desperate sentence … sometimes you just choose to consider in whatever solvent are possible . So , at this point , I make up one’s mind to believe in what he said , and we had to go get proof that he was right . We hold out in France , so we decided to drive to Morocco ( about 1500 klick driving + a 6 - hour boat , + 500 kilometre in Morocco again ) . I ’ve never been as frightened as I was during the driving force . I was sit down in the back on the rightfield , my father on the left , my aunt between us . She went berzerk it at some degree . We could n’t really stop her , and she was endeavor to hit my uncle who was drive . We almost ran into a bulwark at one period . My Padre had to have her in a throttlehold until she lost some forcefulness .

Hands of diverse individuals using a spirit board with lit candles nearby, creating a mystical atmosphere

Anyway , we made it to Morocco to this village named Sefrou . Rather creepy-crawly place , but not in a schematic creepy way . There , we met this exorcist guy cable . He involve us to buy a sheep to ' sacrifice ' and told us we should bring the sheep ’s guts back to him for the dispossession to encounter . My father and uncle took care of this . Me … I was flaming SCARED . As stated sooner , I did n’t think in that shit . But at this degree , in a freaking skittish hamlet in the heart of Morocco , I was really losing it and could n’t wait to leave this place eternally .

On the undermentioned day , we went to the exorcist ’s , bringing him these guts . He put them in a bowl and asked that if we were feeling warm enough , we stick with him as more people would make it easier to ' exorcize ' my auntie . Well … I really want to leave , but get word everybody staying , I stayed as well .

My aunt was lying down in front of us next to the bowl , and we were sitting down around her , holding manpower . The exorcist started say clobber I could n’t understand ( it was traditional Arabic and not a Maroc dialect ) . He get sweaty as he let the cat out of the bag quicker , and I saw my aunt jerk in what looked like pain . The lights went out ( holy jack , I think I pee my pants at this instant ) , the exorciser holler something , my auntie screamed as well , and then full … silence .

A solemn man in priest attire stands in a church, looking upward with a serious expression

I think the silence went on for about 30 seconds , but it felt like HOURS . The exorcist ’s assistant then came in with a lamp and we saw that both my aunt and the exorciser passed out , and the roll was on the floor with the guts next to it . The guts had reverse black . I have horripilation just writing that and re - picturing that . The help press us not to touch the guts at any cost . The exorcist arouse up , put some water supply on his grimace , and then told us to follow him . We go to a nearby empty brow , and he asked us to glow the guts right there , as ' the demon was now possessing the sheep and we could now get rid of it . ' Done .

I have never seen my aunt show any problem whatsoever since that solar day . Her crisis periods never happened again . She never go back to this ' furious mode ' and to this twenty-four hours , that candidly still fright the turd out of me . Just seeing her now gives me the quiver . And the worst is , her boy love me , but I really have trouble staying around her as I am genuinely frightened , and they evidently do n’t know why . "
