" When I was young , I thought it would be so cool to have this life . Now I hate it . "

We all have things we daydream about — for me, it’s living in a gorgeous mansion near the ocean and traveling all over the world, hitting a different city every month.

However, things aren’t always as nice as they seem. For starters, houses, pets, and traveling can all beverycostly and require other time commitments and expenses.

Plenty of things tend to be romanticized, but a lot of them don’t get enough flack. But now, people are sharing the things that fall into this category on thisReddit thread, and it’s veryyy interesting to think about.

So, without further ado, here are 19 of the most romanticized things that actually aren’t so great in reality:

1.“The past. You almost certainly did not have it much better in the ’50s or ’60s; you are either overly nostalgic or too easily fooled by adverts aimed at elites from that era.”

2.“The mafia. Give me an effing break aboutThe Godfatherand all those movies.”

3.“Providing for your partner. Being the only source of income comes with an enormous amount of pressure, stress, and isolation. It’s maddening to have the entire weight of your family’s wellbeing and future on your shoulders while your partner makes TikToks and complains that you didn’t buy them enough weed.”

4.“Living in the Victorian era. Yes, I get to wear beautiful dresses and live out that cottagecore aesthetic, but oh no, I’ve been constantly pregnant for 15 years and I’ve had to bury half my children because they died from things that are preventable in the 21st century.”

5."‘Fighting’ for your marriage, especially older couples and their reasoning as to why marriages lasted 50+ years back in the ‘good ole days.’ One party is always resentful deep down, IMO."

– throwawy8627

6.“Cooking with your partner in the kitchen. Get the FUCK out of my way!”

7.“Salem, MA. It’s seen as a fun and quirky town instead of a place where horrifying crimes were committed, and I’ve always found that strange.”

– aewright0316

8.“Pregnancy. I love my child more than life itself but pregnancy was physically and mentally torturous.”

9.“Newborn babies. I mean, after six or so weeks, they’re pretty amazing, but before that, they are just screaming sacks of alien goo.”

– dwallit

10.“Owning a swimming pool or hot tub. So much maintenance only for your kids to whine that there’s nothing to do all summer.”

11.“The ‘gypsy’ lifestyle, or wanderlust, or van life, or whatever stupid name privileged white girls are calling it now. I moved 10 times before graduating high school and eight more times as an adult. It is anything but glamorous. It’s traumatic and normally done quickly and out of necessity. Nothing infuriates me more than the luckiest, most fortunate people scoffing at their own security like it’s some prison they can’t wait to free themselves from.”

12.“Weddings. Go check out the ‘Am I the Asshole’ sub if you don’t believe it. It’s probably the most frequent single topic there.”

13.“Traveling for work…hate spending half my life at the airports and in cabs away from friends and family, eating by myself and alone in a hotel room late at night with nothing to do, no one to talk to, and sleeping in an unfamiliar bed. You end up essentially working all the time to pass the time. When I was young, I thought it would be so cool to have this life. Now I hate it.”

– Complex - Froyo-4220

14.“Owning multiple homes, boats, etc. in exotic places. You can only live in one place at any time, and maintaining all that shit gets to be a drag.”

15.“Having a high IQ. Most of the time it’s a plus, but it can also be isolating.”

– IZii01

16.“Match day for medical residency. It’s touted as super happy and exciting, which it is in part. But it’s also insanely stressful and many people either don’t match or don’t get their top selection and are less than ecstatic.”

17.“Marrying someone for money rather than love. So many people dream of marrying someone to take care of them financially when (IMO) a loveless/transactional marriage seems suffocating and lonely.”

– luvmichelle

18.“Being an influencer on social media. Specifically a family influencer.”

19.“Guys pressing you, and asking you out over and over again. Like he does inThe Notebookand lots of other ‘romance movies.’ Like, if a guy climbed up a Ferris wheel and told me he would kill himself if I didn’t go on a date with him, I would freak out.”
