Arguably, the theme of the 2025Met Gala— Tailored for You — is one of the easiest in recent memory to claim you attempted. After all, just showing up in a black suit would technically fit the bill. It might be dull, but such is life.

But of course, there is much more to the theme than a Boring Black Suit™. The museum’s Costume Institute’sexhibitthis year isSuperfine: Tailoring Black Style, so looks should ideally further celebrate Black excellence in fashion and the style of Black dandyism. Some people rose to the challenge remarkably, such asTeyana Taylor,Zendaya, andRihanna.

Others, presumably, saw the theme as more optional. A quick note! Just because a look is not on theme does not mean it doesn’t look good (editor, you are welcome for the triple negative). Conversely, a look that is on theme can still look more like an outfit to wear to the Deloitte Christmas party than the Met Gala.
